James Torrence
Carver Vo-Tech High School
James has thrived despite a challenging childhood. He fought
off clinical depression caused by having to deal with a fatherless
environment, a mother addicted to drugs leading to extended
stays in prison and later dealing with his mother's deadly
bout with cancer. He found refuge in clubs and community service
organizations by taking leadership roles in organizations
such as YMCA youth programs, and his high school's Student
Government Association. James was also an active participant
in Councilman Kenneth Harris' Aid Campaign. James community
service acumen has been recognized by the YMCA when he was
named Volunteer of the Year and his academic commitment to
excellence is evident in his standing in the top 2% of his
class and membership in the National Honor Society.
